Welcome To Start Consulting

Hello, welcome to my Start Consulting blog.  Through this blog I hope to share stories about I got started consulting and how I’m trying to grow my practice.  Getting started in consulting can be a very exciting career move, but it can also be very scary. For years, I always dreamed about consulting and the freedom it would bring, but for years I never took that step.

One reason why I probably did not start earlier is because I was way to busy at my other job.  I was working over 50 hours a week and was doing on-call duty as well.  Since most people only want consulting during the day that pretty much limited me to a job.

I got my break in consulting because my wife took another job in another state.  While I was looking for a job in that other state too I decided that I should just go for it.  Because I would not have another opportunity like this again.  After all I could get a job anytime.  But how often would I get a free chance to start consulting.

Like most of you reading this you probably read lots of consulting books and how to get started consulting books but never took any action.  One of the thing that is important if you want to take this step and one thing that I did was to have an emergency fund.

Solo consulting practices are cheap to set up, but since you likely won’t have any income coming in for months it is best if you have some money saved up, also, my wife was working full time and we had health benefits.  So you can see why it was the perfect time for me to start.

Another reason why I started was that I found a consulting job before I even moved so I had it set up and ready to go.  Most people who start consulting practices have to start from zero.

If you want to be a consultant and have the freedom it brings, you have to work for it, but you also have to be disciplined.

One of the things that drove me was a  quote saying “you have to work harder for yourself than others.”  You have to make this quote true in your life if you want to succeed at anything.
