Tips For Finding Entry Level Consultant Jobs
Finding entry level consultant jobs in this economy can be tough while landing one can seem almost impossible. When most people think of consulting jobs they dream of landing a gig at one of the Big 5 firms. In this post I go over on how to find good positions and how to stay ahead of others who are seeking the same positions using a free service.
The free service that I am talking about is Google Alerts. This is a great service that allows you to stay ahead of your peers and stay up on all the latest knowledge in your industry. A google alert is basically an email you get when there are any news, blog posts, or press releases about anything you want to find out about. For example if you want to stay up on all the latest news at Ernst and Young, you just set up a Google Alert for this.
Find Jobs
Unfortunately most jobs are found out by work of mouth. If you don’t know anyone on the inside you are at a big disadvantage, but don’t let this deter you. 99% of people are on the outside. The first places to look are at company websites, calling their HR departments, Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, or your campus career office.
Everyday or at least twice a week you need to scour these sources for any new postings and have your resume ready to be mailed off. This is where your persistence and determination will put you ahead of the pack. While others might have given up, you will be there to take advantage of any job offerings.
Starting Your Own Company
When the economy is down like this, more people find that working for themselves is a much better alternative than trying to find a position at a large accounting firm. Besides most firms want you to have at least 5 years experience anyways.
Starting your own consulting firm can be hard, but it is better than waiting around for a position to open. Pick up some good books on how to get started as a consultant and go for it. When the economy picks up you will be in great position to find all sorts of great clients.
