Consulting Careers

Consulting careers are extremely variable and wide ranging.  In this post I will try and cover all the different consulting career possibilities, but I will likely not even scratch the surface, and in the process you’ll see why consulting is such a great career choice. There are so many different ways that you could be involved in consulting and I’ll try to list as many as possible.  First of all we can break consulting down into independent consultants, those who work for themselves, and group consultants, those who work with other consultants.  Group consultants can vary a lot from 2 consultants to fortune 500 companies.

Also, there is almost not an industry out there where you will not find consultants servicing.  If you can think of an industry, I can almost guarantee there are some type of consultants for it.  Livestock, veterinarians, metals, hospital care, clothing stores, fishing tournaments, you name it.

Most consultants normally do projects for multiple companies, but there are also consultants who end up working just for one company their whole careers, and are almost like employees.

Most consultants normally do this type of work full time, where as others do this part-time.  College professors are a good example of this.  Many university professors consult on the side, because they usually have a certain percentage of personal time in their contract.  While some companies like this, and will work with professors, other companies find it frustrating, because since consulting is not a primary income for professors, they often loose interest in the middle of projects.

So you can see with so many possible industries to work for and so many consulting careers to choose from you are bound to find one that fits you.  The hardest part of being a consultant is choosing what services you will offer.

When looking over consulting careers, be sure to pick an industry where your strengths can shine.  Also, when you service an industry you have already worked in,  you can use your contacts to get more consulting jobs.

If you still have a 9-5 job but want to get into consulting, start now by researching as much as you can and start planning possible career moves.
